This agreement marks the second sixth-generation combat aircraft project secured by Boeing, following the F-47 program developed for the U.S. Air Force.

The new-generation fighter jet developed by Boeing will replace the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet fleet, which has been in service with the U.S. Navy since the 1990s. Initial series-production F/A-XX aircraft are projected to enter the inventory in the 2030s, while Super Hornets are expected to remain operational through the 2040s. The new platform will form the cornerstone of the Navy's carrier-based air defense systems, featuring advanced range, stealth characteristics, and the capability to operate in integration with unmanned combat aerial vehicles.

The agreement will provide a substantial operational workload for Boeing's combat aircraft division as the company prepares to wind down final assembly lines for the F/A-18 Super Hornet and EA-18G Growler in St. Louis, Missouri.

Commenting on the development, Acting U.S. Secretary of the Navy Hung Cao stated, "This achievement marks the beginning of a new era for the U.S. Navy. The sixth-generation fighter will deliver a generational leap in air dominance and provide the world's finest aviators with unmatched capabilities on the battlefield."

Advanced Capabilities and System Integration

The F/A-XX project will incorporate advanced sensor technologies, high lethality, and extended range capabilities, alongside the ability to conduct joint operations with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The aircraft will operate in full integration with existing F-35 platforms.

Following the elimination of Lockheed Martin during the tender process, Boeing secured the contract by outperforming its rival, Northrop Grumman. Boeing officials stated that the company is continuing investments in infrastructure, technology, and human resources to ensure the project is delivered on schedule and to exact specifications.
