US: China in possession of F-35 parts

The F-35 Joint Program Office (JPO) under the Pentagon stated that it is "aware of a shipment issue involving unserviceable F-35 components" and is actively coordinating with relevant government agencies and industry partners to retrieve the parts and conduct a comprehensive security review.

Reverse engineering risks

The incident has heightened security concerns in Washington regarding potential technical exposure. Given Beijing's history of cyber espionage aimed at acquiring F-35 program data, defense analysts warn that physical access to the cockpit canopy—which features specialized radar-absorbent coatings and composite structures—presents a high risk of reverse-engineering by Chinese defense experts.

Discussions among officials from the U.S. House Armed Services Committee, the Department of Defense, and the Department of State have been ongoing since June. Congressional staffers confirmed that oversight and investigative procedures into the logistics failure remain active.

Prime contractor Lockheed Martin and associated logistics subcontractors declined to comment on individual shipments citing operational security protocols. Neither the Chinese Foreign Ministry nor the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has issued an official statement regarding the status of the equipment.
