The agreement was formalized on August 31. While specific financial terms, vehicle quantities, and exact delivery schedules have not been publicly disclosed, the overarching Spanish artillery modernization program is estimated to be valued at approximately 4.55 billion euros ($5.3 billion).
The modernization roadmap outlines the procurement of:
-
128 tracked artillery vehicles
-
120 ammunition resupply vehicles
-
21 armored recovery vehicles
-
11 command-and-control vehicles
Under the terms of the partnership, Indra Sistemas will oversee the domestic manufacturing of vehicle hulls in Spain. The Spanish contractor will integrate its proprietary mission systems, combat management software, and specialized equipment, while Hanwha’s battle-proven K9 platform will serve as the backbone for the system's long-range fire capabilities.
With this contract, Spain becomes the 11th nation to adopt the K9 system. The global user and procurement community now includes Poland, Romania, Turkey, Finland, Estonia, Norway, Australia, India, Egypt, and South Korea.
Boasting a combat weight of 46.3 metric tons, a maximum road speed of 67 kilometers per hour, and an operational range of 360 kilometers, the 155mm/52-caliber K9 remains South Korea’s most successful defense export. This sustained international momentum has played a pivotal role in establishing Seoul as the second-largest arms supplier to European NATO members, trailing only the United States.
