NVIDIA and US Army pivot with strategic move

Combining secure computing, storage, networking infrastructure, and software into a single platform, the system offers a scalable architecture designed for integration into existing networks. The hardware features 36 NVIDIA Grace central processing units (CPUs) and 72 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra graphics processing units (GPUs), enabling high-parallel processing of AI workloads.

The next-generation supercomputer architecture supports large-scale data analysis and model development across computationally intensive domains, including weather and ocean modeling, operations research, cybersecurity, disaster resilience, and response planning.

"As this capability matures, it will enable student and faculty researchers at NPS to detect patterns faster, evaluate options more quickly, and generate deeper insights," said Trenton Hancock, Chief Information Officer at NPS. "The ultimate value lies in accelerating the translation of data into operationally meaningful effects—shortening the time to learn, adapt, and make better decisions in support of the naval service."

AI integration in defense

The deployment stems from joint AI research initiatives conducted under a Collaborative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between NPS and NVIDIA.

The system was formally introduced at a ceremony this month attended by NVIDIA Founder and CEO Jensen Huang, Commander of the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command Adm. Samuel J. Paparo, and NPS President retired Vice Adm. Ann Rondeau.

Highlighting the growing role of artificial intelligence in national security, Huang emphasized that AI will serve as the backbone of American defense.

"By supporting NPS, we are empowering them to train on this technology, build with it, and lead American warfighting power with the decisive advantages our Sailors, Marines, and the joint force deserve" Huang said.

With the installation phase complete, NPS will shift its primary focus toward operational deployment and field integration.
