Serving as a continuation of the agreement signed between MKE and MIRAS at SAHA 2026, the MoU covers the modernization of BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicles currently in the inventory of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, as well as the execution of joint defense industry projects within Azerbaijan. The first modernized BMP-1 has been designated as "TURAN" and introduced to the public for the first time at the MKE stand during the ADEX Exhibition.
The signed memorandum also aims to evaluate new projects focusing on weapons, ammunition, systems integrated into vehicles, and maintenance and overhaul operations.
Modernized BMP-1T (TURAN) to counter drone threats
Modernized by MKE and exhibited for the first time at ADEX 2026, the BMP-1T (TURAN) upgrades the fire power, target detection, tracking, and fire control capabilities of the legacy platform to meet modern combat requirements.
As part of the modernization package, the existing 73 mm main gun is replaced by a 30 mm automatic cannon featuring a dual-feed ammunition mechanism. The new turret structure provides operational flexibility against diverse targets through an increased elevation angle and 360-degree continuous rotation capability.
Supported by electro-optic and thermal imaging systems, automatic target tracking, and advanced stabilization capabilities, the BMP-1T (TURAN) enhances mission effectiveness both day and night. Meanwhile, the renewed digital control infrastructure strengthens crew coordination during target detection, evaluation, and engagement processes.
Furthermore, leveraging the experience gained by MKE in the development of the TOLGA Close Air Defense System, the modernization aims to equip the BMP-1T (TURAN) with protection capabilities against drone threats.
