Engineered to adapt swiftly to the evolving demands of modern warfare, the BlackThorn warhead family features high production scalability, low unit costs, and seamless integration across diverse platform types.
The system comes in three distinct outer diameter sizes: 40 mm, 70 mm, and 120 mm. Its modular architecture allows configurations for blast-fragmentation, fragmentation-only, multi-purpose, and armor-piercing effects—effectively eliminating the need to stockpile multiple distinct warhead types and offering commanders enhanced operational flexibility on the battlefield.
BAE Systems confirmed that BlackThorn will initially be integrated into the Mark I short-range air defense missile developed by Frankenburg Technologies. The deployment marks the first tangible outcome of a strategic collaboration agreement signed between the two defense contractors earlier this year.
Leveraging digital engineering, advanced simulation, and rigorous live-fire field testing, BAE Systems accelerated the development timeline to bring the BlackThorn family to full mass-production readiness for layered air defense and autonomous system capabilities.
